Choosing Brick with Intention

A brick facade holds a quiet kind of power. It can ground a home, connect it to its surroundings, and offer a sense of permanence. The choice is important.

Here are a few things we’ve learned that might help.

Let instinct lead.

Start with what feels right. Notice the bricks you’re drawn to—subtle variation, texture, warmth. Whether soft and handmade or crisp and architectural, your choice should reflect both the home and the people who’ll live in it.

Think about scale.

Different brick sizes carry different moods. Slim profiles can feel refined and modern. Larger formats offer a sense of stillness and strength. There’s no right or wrong—just what suits you.

Mortar plays a role.

The colour and thickness of mortar can shift the entire tone of a façade. Matching mortar blends quietly; contrast highlights each individual brick. It’s worth testing a few options before you commit.

Patterns can say a lot.

The way bricks are laid—whether stacked, staggered or in something more decorative—can subtly shape how the facade feels. Ask your builder or designer about different bond patterns and how they might work with your design.

Choose lasting quality.

Some bricks are made to age beautifully, deepening in character over time. Where you can, opt for bricks that are durable, sustainably made, and suited to the climate they’ll sit in.

Look at the bigger picture.

Bricks don’t sit alone. Think about how they’ll work with other materials—roof tiles, timber, metalwork, landscaping. A facade feels most resolved when everything’s been considered together.

Don’t be afraid to ask.

There’s real value in speaking with those who work with brick every day—your architect, your builder, your supplier. A little guidance can go a long way in helping you feel confident in your choices.
